Voting or Nah?

Voting or Nah?

With the Shaderoom and The Real promoting us millennials to get out and vote, I wonder how much people will actually listen and get out there. With social media practically promoting clicktivism, I can strongly admit that my generation is extremely lazy. With hashtags serving as the sole voice for the youth, there’s a lack of seriousness presented when it actually comes to going outside and making a change.

Back in my hometown, the Bronx, there are many undocumented immigrants, green card holders, and even people with disability issues who lack the ability to vote. There are also others who are eligible to vote but choose not to do so either out of pure ignorance or laziness. Then there are people like me, who want to vote and have been persuaded to take advantage of our civic responsibilities.

With a mass spotlight shining on the promo for the midterm elections alongst with my homework and work, I lost track to submit my absentee ballot. After all, this is my first time voting and I was completely clueless and surprised as to how long the process would take. So after researching on my options and asking questions, I decided to shoot my district an email. Unfortunately, that picture was my response.  Rude, short, and disappointing.

I get turned off by the lack of voting spirit my area offers let alone the lack of respectful, humane and considerate officials who are willing to inspire and help others out. It’s responses like these that turn me off because it makes me not take the whole election seriously considering the officials from my district lack the decency to inform others despite being their job.

Luckily for me, I am only a 45 min D train ride away from my voting poll site. Although it annoys me to wake up early, leave my dorm and come back before my classes start, I feel really good about doing it. For one, I won’t be like the millennials who bark talking about how XYZ is dumb when they don’t use their right to vote (I have a cousin who talks so much crap but refused to register). I would just hate to be that person who complains about the crappy politics and does nothing when the opportunity is presented to them. Others might say “Well your one vote doesn’t really matter.” Even if that is the case, which it really isn’t, why just sit on the side and do nothing. There’s a reason for our voices and I will be honored to vote for those including my mom who can’t vote. So no that bull and depressing email response isn’t going to stop me from voting blue tomorrow 🙂
