I remember looking at my high school senior picture and just hating the way my hair looked. My relaxed hair had so much breakage and the length stayed the same for about three years. Two years later, I have big shoulder length hair and I’m very much dedicated to growing it down my waist. But, it took me certain behaviors to achieve that length.
Use Protective Hairstyles
Relaxed hair is very fragile and will meet your natural hair at the line of demarcation which is prone to breakage. You want to refuse manipulation your hair as much as possible. There are braids, weaves, wigs, and even protective hairstyles without weaves that will protect your hair. Going days without touching your hair will lead to less breakage.
Deep Condition
This is a must if you want to retain moisture and have healthy hair. Deep conditioning makes your hair much more manageable and who wants dry hair anyways. And purchase a hooded bonnet dryer attachment while you’re at it. Your hair will appreciate the heat penetrating your strands.
Drink Water
What you put inside you hair matters very much. The more water you are drinking, then I the less dry your hair will feel. Maintaining moisture and making your hair manageable is a must when it comes to transitioning.
Trim
You have to trim your hair if you want to go natural. It’s a must and there’s no point in going natural if you don’t let go of the creamy crack hair. You could always trim an inch every month and slowly you will see how great your curl pattern is.
Feel Confident And Hopeful
I know it can be frustrating waiting for your hair to grow. I know it can be a downer maintaining two different hair types. But, don’t break down and apply a perm to your hair. Experiment with different styles, enjoy your journey, and break out of your comfort zone. You will love the end results.
