How To Achieve The Perfect Twist Out On Your Natural Hair

How To Achieve The Perfect Twist Out On Your Natural Hair

Twists outs are one of my favorite go-to styles. The volume, definition, and the stretch I get makes me an even happier naturalista. However, I never perfected my twists out until this spring. But, now that I am up to date, I want to give you naturals a hand on how to achieve the perfect twist out.

1) Work On Deep Conditioned Damp Hair

It’s crucial to have your hair damp and deep conditioned. This will ensure you that your natural hair is soft and ready to be combed brushed and styled.

Starting off with wet or damp hair makes it easier to part your hair and have a shiny twist out.

Between steps 1-3, you can apply a leave-in conditioner of your choice. I use Renpure Coconut Whipped Creme Leave-In Conditioner which easily infuses into my hair while adding shine and slip tp my 4b/4c curls.

2)Part Your Hair Into At Least 8 Sections

Parting your natural hair especially if you have a kinkier texture makes life so much easier. The only reason why I say to part your hair in at least 8 sections is because the more sections you have, the more defined the twists will come out.

4 is the standard, but I detangle and twist in sections, therefore I need smaller amounts of hair.

Parting your natural hair makes detangling much easier.

You may want to part your hair in more than 8 sections if you have a kinkier texture or if your hair is longer. In my opinion, the more twists and the smaller they are, the better.

You get more volume, definition, body, and shine. Though, parting your hair in too many sections can take up too much time so be cautious.

3) Detangle 1 Section at A Time and Twist

I detangle and twist my hair as I go. I start off with one piece of hair, detangle it with my Denman brush and my moisturizer of choice which is Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey. The hair honey is mixed with shea butter and cocoa butter which allows my hair to easily glide through my brush without the frizz.

If you can, try to purchase a Denman brush. Many naturals use Denman brushes to detangle their hair because they separate curls without snagging your hair. As for twist outs, Denman brushes can reduce frizz while making sure your hair is 100% detangled. It is very much worth it.

Next, equally part that section you just detangled and twist that section of your hair. Feel to use a Denman brush as you twist to give you some stretch.

When you are coming to the end of your twist, wrap the end of your hair in a circular motion similar to the lovely Daye La Soul gif above.

4) Allow Your Twists To Dry

It is crucial for your twists to be 100% dry. I’ve tried unraveling my twists in damp hair, and it just leads to a frizzy disaster. At times, my hair may even need two days to air-dry depending on the weather. Nevertheless, dry twists will save your life.

5) Unravel Your Twist and Separate

Once your twists are completely dry, unravel all them. Then, separate your twists carefully to reduce frizz. If your hair has a bit of frizz to it, don’t mind it. In fact, I’m a big fan of just some frizz.

But, if you want a neat twist out, then try using an oil or a cream on your fingertips when taking down and separating your twists. I personally use the Maui Moisture Quench + Coconut Oil Curl Smoothie which gives my hair bounce and shine.

6) Fluff and Fall In Love

Though this step isn’t necessary, It adds a bunch of volume to your hair. Fluffing your hair, involves you grabbing a comb or an afro pick and teasing your hair with it to make it appear bigger or voluminous. Too much fluffing can lead to frizz. But when you fluff enough, everything falls into place.

And there you have it. I’ve hyperlinked the tutorials and the gifs if you to check them out. Either way, twists out have definitely made me appreciate me my hair even more. They are definitely a confidence booster when done right.
