When I heard about the Karol Sanchez case I was immediately infuriated. In case you don’t know, 16-year-old Karol Sanchez was abducted last night in the Bronx by a group of guys in front of her mom. The men drove away and story went viral. However, that quickly changed when the internet found out the whole thing was a hoax
Apparently, Karol knew her “kidnappers” and devised this plan with them because she didn’t want to go back to Honduras with her strict mom. There are a bunch of things that bother me with this story.
1. It Takes Away Attention From Real Missing Kids
I hate that we spent so much time getting emotionally attached just to find out this was a hoax. All that energy and time could have been spent on someone who is truly missing and in danger. Or better yet, the missing black kids who get no public attention.
2. Serious Claims Won’t Be Taken As Serious
It’s hard enough living in this world as a woman. My friend and I were literally ranting about the pervs and creeps that follow us. It’s even more disappointing that we have stories like this that will give people a reason to further question a woman’s trauma.
In the a world where rape, human/sex trafficking, and sexual assaults can happen at any time, this hoax was such a shame to the real victims out there. Furthermore, it was done for such a selfish reason which makes me even more angry.
3. Black Kids’ Endangerment Means Nothing To Cops
Although this was a hoax, the details show why black kids don’t matter to the police. The fake incident happened around 11:00 pm yesterday night, yet the amber alert was sent today at 10:30 AM. WTF?
It’s obvious that the first few hours of child’s abduction matter the most so why was there no immediate action done? I’m sure if a white kid was taken, we would have gotten an amber alert in minutes. It’s stupid and irresponsible procedures like this that are the reason why many black kids, especially black girls go missing and are never found.
And I relate to this story because one time my teenage cousin went missing in the Bronx. The police took about 3-4 hours to show up and even then, they did nothing. In fact, they simply stated that she will come back not even thinking about the possible danger she may have been in.
Jussie Smollet + Karol Sanchez?
I immediately replayed the hoaxes of 2019 mentally and I must say the Jussie Smollet one still takes the cake. Regardless, I should have known better knowing that news on social media may not always be accurate. Still, with how much everyone was worried and how dangerous the situation was, Karol Sanchez and her kidnappers definitely need to be held accountable for their actions.
