The Pros And Cons Of Mini Twists

The Pros And Cons Of Mini Twists

Mini twists are very common protective styles. They are versatile and in my opinion easy for you to do yourself. But, with quarantine and being force to stay home, I find that now is the perfect time to give my hair a break and retain length. And honestly, my hair does appreciate being twisted up. However, there are pros and cons to having my hair in mini twists.

Cons

1) Matting

matting is common when you leave your mini twists on for too long.

When it’s time to take down my twists, I notice so much matting. On top of that because I don’t comb my hair with the twists in, I get so much more shedding. This just leads to annoying tangles that can be frustrating to go through.

The longer you leave your twists on, the more they tend to matt. Unfortunately for me, my hair begins to make week two.

2) Can Get Dirtier Faster

When it’s time for wash day, I make sure to really wash my twists well. I often find that there is more product on my scalp and I have to really dig my fingers inside my twists.

3) Getting Bored

One thing I noticed about being natural is that I always have to switch up my hairstyle. Actually, a lot of naturals are like this. I get bored very quickly and have the need to experiment with my hair again.

4) Dryer ends

Although I pay attention to my ends the most especially during wash day, I find my ends dry when I put them in mini twists. It’s not surprising considering they are still exposed and that I am constantly rubbing my hair on surfaces. But from time to time I will see fairy knots, the enemy of my natural hair.

Pros

1) Cuts Down Wash Days

Because I’m technically dealing with my hair in thinner sections, washing takes about 20 to 30 minutes for me. It’s super quick and easy for me. And considering my hair is getting longer, mini twists is a super time saver and cures my impatience.

2) Easier Detangling

This probably my biggest pro. My mini twists are practically already sectioned and detangled prior to wash days. They remain that way which I am so grateful for. I am able to untangle them and brush through them with no issue. After putting a leave in conditioner and a sealant of my choice, I am basically applying the LOC method and moisturizing my hair overnight. This give my hair the spruce it needs.

3) Lower Manipulation

The perks to having your hair in twists is that you don’t have to constantly style them. I never have to worry about brushing and combing everyday because I don’t need to. I’ve actually been getting so impatient with my hair because it’s longer and therefore the detangling sessions are too. But mini twists allow you to ease through those sessions and not have you doing any daily maintenance.

I usually style my twists into to mini ponytails or buns. With some hair jewelry added, your mini twists can be looking real cute. An added bonus is that lower manipulation leads to you retaining more length. Sounds like a win to me.less hairdos, always in one style (never have to worry about detangling often) + retain length ; besides the hairdos i do with them are cute

4) Easier to Oil Hair

When my hair is in mini twists, my scalp is able to breathe. In other words, my scalp is exposed a lot more and therefore it feels easier to oil it. Again, this is a huge plus to growing out your natural hair.

Verdict

The verdict for mini twists is...

I think mini twists are still the way to go. I’ve been rocking them practically all summer inside and my hair has felt great. It’s basically the LOC method but for weeks straight. Regardless, it’s cute hairstyle to keep while you are growing your hair. Who knows, I might even continue rocking them out of quarantine.
